What the Caring Society is up to this year

• The Canadian Human Rights Case on First Nations Child Welfare continues with an appeal of Chair Chotalia’s decision to dismiss the child welfare case on a legal technicality scheduled for February 13-15, 2012 in Federal Court. More information at www.fnwitness.ca
• Over 8400 people and organizations from 15 countries in the world are following the Canadian Human Rights Case on First Nations Child Welfare making it one of the most formally watched legal cases in Canadian history.
• Our website www.fncaringsociety.com makes it easy for people of all ages to learn more about First Nations children and families and take action to help. We welcomed over 4 million hits this past year -a 60 percent increase over 2010.
• Published a new edition of the First Peoples Child and Family Review and added new articles to the searchable database of over 2500 articles and publications.
• Jordan’s Principle is supported by over 5100 people and organizations helping make sure First Nations children are not denied government services available to all others because of government payment disputes. Work on implementation continues across Canada.
• Shannen’s Dream for “safe and comfy schools” and culturally based and equitable education is now supported by over 6000 caring people and organizations.
• We were proud to work with First Nations children and youth as well as the Office of the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth in Ontario to produce a report on inequities in education for the United Nations called “Our Dreams Matter Too.” The release of this report received significant international and national media attention.
• Published two alternative reports to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child on the occasion of Canada’s third and fourth periodic reviews including one in collaboration with KAIROS.
• Spoke to over 13,000 people in Canada, Australia, and the USA to raise awareness of the inequities in First Nations education, health and child welfare and engage people in active citizenship to fix the problem.
